OUR POWER, OUR PLANET.

That’s the theme for Earth Day 2025.

The annual celebration, to take place on Tuesday 22 April, is expected to be recognised in more than 192 countries by more than one billion people globally.

For 55 years, Earth Day has been an effective tool used in raising awareness and acting on critically important environmental issues.

The Newcastle Anglican Diocese has joined the cause, developing a strategic plan to reduce its carbon footprint.

Parishes within the diocese have been installing solar panels and planting community gardens and native plants to support biodiversity, as well as participating in Gumtree Services and Meaningful Meanders.

Retired priest and passionate Anglican EcoCare member Robyn says the date is an opportunity to consider steps we can each take toward caring for the environment better.

“Individuals can join in climate action by working to reduce their carbon footprints at home, while travelling or shopping,” Robyn says.

“We invite everyone to support Earth Day.

“There are many ways to get involved and make a difference for our planet on Earth Day and every day. Join millions worldwide in Earth Day 2025 activities, attend a local event or plan and register your own.

“Educate, advocate, mobilise or join a digital wave.

“We advocate for the health of the planet, for our air, oceans, soil, eco-systems, wildlife, and human health.”

In fact, Anglicans have long been concerned about environmental issues and its impact on the people and the planet.

This commitment is reflected in the The Five Marks of Mission, an important mission statement which describes the Anglican communion’s common commitment to protect and conserve the environment and life on our beautiful planet.
