Dr David Banney knows what makes a good choir.

After almost four decades spent studying, working, and teaching in the industry, the talented conductor, composer, violinist and music educator, is well-qualified to offer an opinion.

His impressive resume includes conducting orchestras and ensembles from across the nation, directing the Christ Church Camerata and the Newcastle Music Festival, composing music for orchestra, choir, chamber ensembles, film, festival and CD, as well as numerous other published works.

David is now on the lookout for additional voices to join the highly acclaimed Christ Church Cathedral Choir.

On Sunday 2 March, the group is inviting those who can confidently read music to sing with them at the Cathedral’s Evensong from 4:15pm to 6pm.

Participants must be of sound voice.

“Choir is important in the setting of Newcastle, even if you’re not particularly religious you can come and hear semi-professional singers in an acoustically pleasing setting,” David says.

“Singing at this level is not just about social or health aspects.

“What you gain from singing in a choir is an intangible thing. Music itself is a very beautiful thing, and we’re blessed that here at the Cathedral you can truly appreciate its beauty.”

There is no charge to participate in Evensong, but registration is essential.

Interested parties are encouraged to register by emailing music@newcastlecathedral.org.au before Wednesday 26 February.
