Celebrating 25 years of emergency relief in Teralba

By Peter Gardiner, CEO Samaritans

Samaritans has provided emergency relief in Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, Central Coast and Mid North Coast regions of NSW for over thirty years. Each month we support more than 1,000 families to with the provision of emergency assistance to pay their bills or feed their families.  I am proud that last week we celebrated 25 years of emergency relief services in Teralba.

Since Teralba Emergency Relief Centre opened its doors in 1991, we have supported over 30,000 people in need in the community.  As well as emergency relief, the service also supports the community through breakfast programs in schools and a toy warehouse at Christmas time.  This would simply not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers who generously commit their time.  A special mention to long-standing volunteer Pat Korsman who has been instrumental in the service since the beginning and still continues to volunteer at Teralba ER today!

Our Emergency Relief Centres are often the first point of contact for Samaritans to meet those who are most vulnerable in the community.  The compassion, care and support shown by our Emergency Relief volunteers and staff is vital in reassuring those seeking assistance that we are here for them.

On November 11 staff, volunteers and community members gathered to celebrate the significant achievement and recognise the success of the service with a special lunch.

Over the last 25 years, Teralba Emergency Relief has remained a constant pillar of support to people in need.  I am proud to lead an organisation that is flexible to adapt and evolve in an ever-changing environment to ensure the longevity and success of our important community work.
